Bedlam Boys by jaxraven Bedlam Boys by jaxraven
...the particular version I recommend is sung by Heather Alexander, if you were wondering...

Stock credits include * barefootliam-stock from whom I've taken perhaps fifteen different images for this, ~wrathman-stock, ~ozstock, ~ serp-stock, my Caleb, stock.xchng, freefoto, random webcam shots of my Kitten, and a bloody lot of text... want the lyrics? Look below.

(and don't look too long. Insanity's contagious)

For to see Mad Tom of Bedlam
Ten thousand miles I've traveled,
Mad Maudlin goes on dirty toes,
For to save her shoes from gravel

I now regret that ever,
Poor Tom was so disdained,
My wits I lost when him I crossed,
Which makes me thus go chained

I went down to Satan's kitchen
To break my fast one morning
And there I got souls piping hot
All on the spit a-turning

There I took a cauldron
Where boiled ten thousand harlots
Though full of flame I drank the same
To the health of all such varlets

My staff has murdered giants
My bag a long knife carries
To cut mince pies from children's thighs
For which to feed the fairies

No gypsy, slut or doxy
Shall win my mad Tom from me
I'll weep all night, with stars I'll fight
The fray shall well become me

From the hag and hungry goblin
That into rags would rend ye,
All the sprites that stand by the naked man
In the book of moons, defend ye

I slept not since the Conquest,
Till then I never waked,
Till the naked boy of love where I lay
Me found and stript me naked

The moon embrace her shepherd,
And the queen of love her warrior,
While the first doth horn the star of morn,
And the next the heavenly farrier.

The moon's my constant mistress,
And the lonely owl my marrow;
The flaming drake and the night crow make
Me music to my sorrow

The spirits white as lightening
Would on my travels guide me
The stars would shake and the moon would quake
Whenever they espied me

And then that I'll be murdering
The Man in the Moon to the powder
His staff I'll break, his dog I'll shake
And there'll howl no demon louder

By a knight of ghosts and shadows
I summoned am to tourney
Ten leagues beyond the wide world's end-
Methinks it is no journey

So drink to Tom of Bedlam
Go fill the seas in barrels
I'll drink it all, well brewed with gall
And maudlin drunk I'll quarrel

Still I sing bonny boys, bonny mad boys,
Bedlam boys are bonny,
For they all go bare and they live by the air,
And they want no drink or money

One of my all time favorites. I like the version by "Circled by Hounds".

It's really mystical, and very pretty.

I was reading Mad Maudlin just today, great book. Always a fan of Mercedes Lackey.

*bows gracefully* Thank you for the compliment... and aye, she's one of my favorite authors. She's got quite a way with elves... er, words. >.> I'm not fixated at all. Really.

:D Yes, she certainly does.

Now, this is a song, yes? Do you perhaps know where I can find it? I'd be quite grateful.

Your other work is stunning as well.

The best version of the song is the one by Heather Alexander - [link] is her website, she's got links to order her CDs. The song is on the "Festival Wind" album, one of my favorites. [link] will give you some samples of her music; she's done albums for several excellent writers based on their series as well as a lot of old songs redone well. I also recommend "Midsummer" and "Merlin's Decendants" - check out the sample of "Come My Lady" on Merlin's Decendants for an excellent example of her sound.

Thank you kindly. That will help me a great deal. Your suggestions are much appreciated.

*smile* I'm always happy to recommend her work. She's actually a local artist now - she moved out to Oregon a few years ago - and I've gotten to meet her in person as well as go to most of her concerts. If you like her stuff, I'd also recommend Loreena McKennit and Leslie Fish. The first is a very polished artist, Big Name as it were, and the second is mostly known for her filking.

*nods* You've a LOT of stock that I steal snippets of - there're actually a couple images that don't have you credited because I stole a single note of music, or three pairs of cat whiskers, or the like, and they aren't even visible. I just like knowing they're there.
